Mental Disorders In Teens

Many mental illnesses and disorders can affect adolescents. Some mental disorders may begin in early childhood, while others more commonly surface in the teen years.

If your teen was previously diagnosed with and treated for a mental disorder, adolescent hormonal changes could wreak havoc even if it was already under control. It might seem that your teen is experiencing a setback, or entirely new symptoms may develop.

Some of the mental disorder’s teens can experience are:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Conduct disorder
  • Trauma, or PTSD
  • Eating disorders
  • Attachment disorders
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Schizoaffective disorder
  • Substance abuse disorder

This is not an exhaustive list of mental disorders that can affect teens. However, it does comprise the most common diagnoses that teens experience. If your adolescent has been diagnosed with one or more disorders, or if you suspect your teen may have one, our experienced professionals can help your teen begin to heal and prosper.

Signs Your Teen May Need Treatment

Each of the above mental health conditions has its own set of symptoms and diagnostic criteria. However, many disorders have overlapping symptoms. Some of the signs that your teen may have a mental disorder include:

  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Loss of appetite
  • Eating too little, too much, using laxatives or vomiting
  • Loss of interest in friends, activities, or favorite hobbies
  • Declining grades, especially if the decline is sudden
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sadness and hopelessness
  • An unreasonable or overwhelming fear
  • Intense worrying that interferes with daily activities
  • Paranoia, delusional thought patterns, or hallucinations
  • Agitated, aggressive, or violent behavior
  • Behavior that seems out of control
  • Self-harming behaviors
  • Threats or attempts at suicide

It can be easy to overlook or dismiss some of these symptoms because sometimes they are a normal part of teen angst, rebellion, and hormonal change.

If your teen is exhibiting any of these symptoms, Prosper Treatment Center can help you identify if your adolescent may need help. Most mental health disorders are highly treatable. Early detection and treatment can have a significant impact on prognosis. That’s because when mental health conditions are left to fester, symptoms may progress, and unhealthy coping mechanisms can manifest. This increases the risk of poor and sometimes tragic outcomes, such as dropping out of school, substance abuse, criminal behavior, homelessness, jail time, and premature death.

Prosper Treatment can help prevent a tragedy by providing your teen the treatment he or she needs in a safe, supportive environment.
